Blue LED Therapy and Acne

Blue LED (light emitting diode) is an effective acne treatment and has become quite popular over the past several years.

Its short blue wavelength (400-480 nanometers) helps kill the P. (Propionibacterium acnes) bacteria, which is the bacteria that surrounds the sebaceous glands and the bacteria that contributes to acne breakouts. By destroying the DNA of the P. bacteria, Blue LED attacks it at its source, preventing future breakouts.

Blue LED also helps reduce inflammation (redness, pain, and swelling) that is often associated with acne lesions. Therefore, it works well on red (inflamed) pimples. Continued Blue LED usage results in improvement in all types of inflammatory acne (including mild, moderate, severe, and even cystic acne).

Lastly, Blue LED causes the sebaceous glands produce less oil. Less oil and P. bacteria in the skin help reduce acne breakouts.

Professional Blue LED treatments are more aggressive and can treat larger areas in a shorter time. However, clients also benefit from maintenance with a home product, to keep the bacteria from coming back and the acne from flaring up.

Professional treatments are usually performed once or twice a week for 15 to 20 minutes. At-home LED products can be used up to five times per week for 20 minutes. Another added benefit to a home device is that it is very convenient as the client can use it whenever they have time.

Overall, Blue LED helps achieve clear skin and improve self-confidence.
